Your afternoon in Rouen

An afternoon in Rouen can be filled with a variety of visits, each as interesting as the next. Here are a few suggestions, but there are many more to choose from. Visit the Rouen Tourism website for practical information.

  • A stroll along Rue du Gros Horloge is a must, as this street is so important to the history of the city. Beyond the beauty of the buildings that line it, it connects the Place du Vieux Marché and Rouen Cathedral. This 11th- and 12th-century Gothic cathedral is the tallest in France. Recently renovated, it is a key attraction for understanding the city's splendor in the Middle Ages.
  • Several places are notable in the history of Rouen, which witnessed the rise and death of Joan of Arc. The Joan of Arc museum can be visited, as can the Place de la Pucelle, where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake.
  • You will find permanent exhibitions displaying various works and objects from the Middle Ages in several museums that you can select according to your personal interests:
  • The Museum of Antiquities recognized as a Museum of France (collections currently being reorganized; please check the museum's website for opening hours and availability).
  • The museum Le Secq des Tournelles , also known as the Museum of Iron Arts, houses collections of iron creations.
  • You can also visit the Rouen Museum of Fine Arts, which has collections from different periods, from the late Middle Ages to the present day.

Harcourt Castle

If your visit to Harcourt ended earlier in the morning, don't hesitate to explore the nearby town of Bernay, which you can also visit after lunch. The Abbey of Notre-Dame de Bernay is remarkable, as is the town's Museum of Fine Arts.

Departure for Nassandres-sur-Risle (10 min)

For lunch, we suggest you visit Auberge de la Vallée. This gourmet restaurant is located near Harcourt and offers bold, high-quality dishes. With its daring combination of original flavors, this restaurant has established itself as a must-visit in the region. Fresh produce, a menu that changes with the seasons, a friendly atmosphere, and convenient location... Remember to book ahead, as it is a popular restaurant, especially in summer.

Departure for Bec-Hellouin (20 min)

The Bec-Hellouin is one of the most beautiful villages in France. There you will find a charming tea room and a crêperie, but above all an abbey still run by the monks who live there. Guided tours are offered by an association or by the monks themselves. Remember to book your guided tour! The Benedictine monks who live there will offer you a tour of their living quarters, with respect and tradition.
